In the aftermath of World War I, the imminent collapse of civilization seemed inevitable. The great poet, T.S. Elliot turned to ancient Grail Legends for insight and composed one of the greatest poems of the English Language, “The Wasteland”. Scholars have spent years arguing the subtle nuances of it’s exquisite prose, I responded to the vivid imagery and atmosphere that Elliot conjures from the page. At once distraught and beaten down, yet strangely optimistic at the same time, this work is sparse and still. Written with an excessively economic motivic palette, it explores a full range of emotions as it works its way from quiet despair to triumphant anger, with stops for exquisite beauty along the way.
